Make It: Beach Vacation Memory Jar

It's Spring Break time and I thought it would be a great time to share my Beach Vacation Memory Jars. This is a fun project whether you're documenting a recent trip or have a little vacation sand stashed away from a past trip. If you're at the beach right now, even better! Looking out our windows here, a beach getaway sounds fabulous!

Sand and shells in small photo-topped jars.

We're at home this break, but we've been fortunate to take beach vacations in past years. With more snow in the forecast for the end of the week, I thought it would be fun to share a few favorite spring break photos from past trips and a fun keepsake project.

Here's how to put together your own beach memory jar.

Supplies Needed for Beach Vacation Memory Jars

  • Jar with Cork Stopper (I found mine in the Target Dollar Spot, but here's a link to a similar vintage-style glass jar with a cork stopper.)
  • Large Paperclip
  • Printed Vacation Photo (Mine's about 3"x4")
  • Sand, Shells, or other small vacation mementos
  • Embellishments (optional)

Remove the label. Wash and thoroughly dry your jar so it's not wet when you add your sand. For the photo holder top, use a knife to put a slit in the top of the cork. Press the large paperclip into the cork. Mine fit tightly, but if yours doesn't add a little glue to hold it in place.

The paperclip works great to hold your favorite vacation photo or souvenir postcard. I added some titles and and the year using Adobe Photoshop Elements before printing. For printing snapshots at home, I use an Epson Picturemate photo printer.

Add your sand and/or shells and embellish if desired. I tied some baker's twine around mine.

This idea can be adapted to any bottle or jar you like. Choose a jar to fit your keepsakes. Instead of a photo holder top, you could drop the photo right into the jar with your beach treasures.

Here's a jar I put together years ago when the kids were pretty little after a trip to Naples. It's pretty simple. Drop in some sand and shells and add a favorite beach photo. I used alphabet stamps to add the location to a simple card stock tag and dropped that in too. The jar is a cracker jar with a screw-on lid.

As you can see, any jar, bottle or glass container will work. Here are a couple of adorable versions that my creative sister put together after their trip to Hilton Head.

For the larger one, she used a simple glass vase adorned with ribbon and rub-on transfers. The wide opening made it easy to add the sand dollar, shells and photo collage. The straight-sided bottle is also decorated with rub-ons from the craft store. Doesn't it look cute on it's side like that?

Pretty much anything goes! Even colored bottles work;)

Start your memory jar collection today. Have fun reminiscing, and I'd love to see your finished projects. Leave me a link in the comments of this post or tag me on Instagram.

No sand right now? Pin this idea so you remember it for your next beach trip:)
